Connecticut Drag Dop Com has Risen
Yoohoo,
It’s almost easter. That time of year where Jesus came back from the dead and laid some eggs on a rabbit. Idk I’m Jewish.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This year, a much more important figure has risen: Local drag journalism website Connecticut Drag Doy Com
I’ve parodied the site before, and I was frustrated when they went down. That’s why I figured I should say something now that the site is back! You can read both of those articles if you want, but I’ll give a brief summary of what happened for people that aren’t terminally online crossdressers familiar with the sequence of events.
PREVIOUSLY ON THIS SPECIFIC NICHE OF INTERNET:
Connecticut Drag started as fan pages on instagram and facebook that posted pictures and videos of local performers. The founder of the pages, Kevin*, expanded this into a full website.
*I call him Kevy, but you can’t do that it’s my thing.
The website hosts photos, interviews from performers, and articles explaining general drag concepts. It’s a great platform made with good intentions from someone who cares deeply about what we do for some reason. It’s especially valuable now that drag has become the latest moral panic for homophobic morons.
To some extent drag has always been competitive, and there’s pros and cons to that. One of the biggest cons is how fragile it’s made so many egos. Whenever one queen gets attention, five other hens start squawking. Kevy got flak from insecure entitled entertainers bitter that they weren’t featured.
There was also an issue where he talked about a show that he only saw video of, and some of the performers thought he missed the mark with his interpretation.
The thing is… he’s one dude. He can only go to so many late-night events across the state. However, Kevy is generally open to collaboration and he’s certainly open to constructive criticism made in good faith (there’s a contact page on the site for a reason). People went from 0 to 100 with him. He got overwhelmed. Since then, he’s taken time to recalibrate and has plans on how to run the site more smoothly going forward.
RECAP OVER! WHAT’S NEXT?
The site is back, there’s already some new interviews up. There’s a new section for advertising, so now no diva will feel left behind and Kevy can actually be partially compensated for the work he’s putting in. The site will be sponsoring some upcoming events, like the next Chez Snatch Game. I definitely plan on auditioning to compete in that again, I had a lot of fun playing Marilyn last year. Just gotta figure out how to make my costume for this year. I won’t spoil my character choice yet, but I have something… specific in mind.
I’ve written articles and taken photos for the site in the past, and am looking forward to doing more. I know I have my site, but the tone and audience are different enough that it makes sense to work on both. Connecticut Drag is a source for reputable, intelligent, uplifting information about the drag community. My personal website is committed to providing baseless gossip, rambling opinion pieces, and esoteric art projects. It doesn’t make sense to alert the Connecticut Drag scene every time I draw a new egg.
Kevy’s website is like a respectable newspaper and my website is more like a trashy magazina. One thing my website is especially great for is…
gratuitous self-promotion! Yayyy! Enough about Kevy and his site it’s time to talk about
ME, FLaminia:
This year I’ve started a digital magazina to keep track of what I’m posting each month. It’s a glorified menu tbh, but my website’s navigation was really bad, and now it’s a little less bad. Besides, it’s got pretty covers, which makes it a magazine.
Later this month you can see me, Flaminia, in the flesh! I’ll be in Clementine’s Bergen the House Down March 28th. Then on March 29th I’ll be hosting Love Games! Live! at the Goldenrod Inn in Worthington, Massachussetts.
I’m especially excited for that one. We’re playing the Dating Game and the Newlywed Game. Bring someone you love, or someone you’re indifferent about idc. It’s my first time hosting since my last show got cancelled, and I will go berserk if I flop again want it to go well (´◡`❁)
Best of luck to Kevy in his resumed endeavors, and bestester luck to me, Flaminia, in my ongoing quest for relevancy.
k thx bye ttyl <3
